Mental Toughness Skills At Work

The most valuable outcomes for Mental Toughness at work are:

Performance

Wellbeing

Positive Behaviours

Performance

Mentally tough people show greater commitment to setting and achieving goals and targets, they respond more positively to challenge, they cope with adversity and setbacks with greater confidence and have a stronger sens of being able to conrol their ability to achieve

Wellbeing

The more mentally tough are more likely to deal with everyday stressors. They are less likely to report being stressed and more likely to report being able to complete stressful and hallengin days at work, feeling satisfied or content.

Interestingly, the more mentally tough emerge as less likely to report being bullied, which has been shown when two groups (mentally tough and mentally sensitive) see exactly the same behaviour in two different ways. The mentally sensitive would feel the actions / behaviour were directed specifically at them - that they were being 'picked on' - whereas the mentally tough don't take it personally.

Positive Behaviours

People who are mentally tough are more likely to be described as (or to describe themselves as) 'can do'. They tend to assess and accept risk with a more positive mindset and they also tend to be more aspirational than the mentally sensitive.

Today, almost everybody at work is affected by change programmes, customer driven or competitor driven, or possible merger / acquisition / downsizing activity, and these are all sources of stressors, pressure and challenge.
